Table tennis legend Timo Boll continues to defy expectations at the Singapore Smash 2024. The 43-year-old German maestro rolled back the years with a thrilling 3-1 victory over China’s rising star Lin Shidong in the round of 16.
Boll, a former World No. 1, hasn’t lost his magic touch. After a two-year absence from Singapore Smash, he’s back and better than ever. Dominant wins over Chew Zhe Yu Clarence and Anton Kallberg showcased his experience and skill.
His toughest challenge came against the 18-year-old Lin Shidong, fresh off a stunning upset against reigning champion Fan Zhendong. While Lin possessed youthful speed, Boll countered with pinpoint precision, putting the young gun under pressure.

Despite a shaky start, Lin fought back, winning the third game and pushing Boll to a 5-8 deficit in the fourth. But Boll, a veteran of countless battles, refused to surrender. He dug deep, reeled off four consecutive points, and sealed the victory in four games.
“I had to make him realize there’s still a player here, not just an old man!” Boll said with a laugh. “The win in Doha gave me a lot of confidence, and I’m feeling good. When healthy, I know I can compete at the highest level.”
Boll’s next opponent, Liang Jingkun, will demand his best in the quarterfinals. Yet, the German star is embracing the challenge and relishing every moment under the Singapore spotlight.
“I’m nearing the end of my career, so I savor every game, every point,” he shared. “Facing an opposing crowd is a unique atmosphere, and I kind of enjoy it.”
Boll isn’t the only veteran defying age. Sharath Kamal Achanta, just two years younger, also reached the quarterfinals. The 41-year-old Indian fought his way from the qualifiers, showcasing his evergreen talent. His victory over Omar Assar marks him as the first Indian man to reach the Singapore Smash quarterfinals.
Boll and Achanta serve as inspiring examples that age is just a number. As the saying goes, “class is permanent.” These table tennis titans are proving their class remains as strong as ever.
