The 2025 Baler International Pro, a key event on the World Surf League (WSL) calendar, recently concluded its thrilling run at the historic Sabang Beach in Baler, Philippines. Serving as both a Qualifying Series (QS) 4000 and a Longboard Qualifying Series (LQS) event, the competition brought together top regional and international talent, with the Longboard division, in particular, becoming a major showcase for the prowess of Filipino surfers.

A Stage for Rising Stars

Held from November 17-23, 2025, the event proved to be a challenging but rewarding stop for competitors. Conditions throughout the week varied, with wind-ruffled, two-to-three-foot swells testing the adaptability and technique of surfers.

The QS 4000 division was marked by standout performances from Japanese surfers. Yuji Nishi (JPN) continued his dominant momentum through the event, securing the highest single-wave score of the QS competition with a powerful backhand blast, earning him a spot in the semifinals. Similarly, Shino Matsuda (JPN) displayed a sharp forehand attack, advancing through the quarter-finals as she pushed for a return to the Challenger Series.

Local talent also made a significant impact, with young Filipino surfers like Cathleya Isidra (PHL) advancing to the Round of 16 in the Women’s QS, proving the depth of the country’s emerging talent pool.

The Longboard Division: A Filipino Triumph

The Longboard Qualifying Series (LQS 1000) division was where Team Philippines truly shone, reinforcing the nation’s strength in traditional surfing disciplines.

  • Men’s LQS Champion: The men’s LQS title was captured by current World Longboard Tour competitor, Jay-R Esquivel (PHL), who showcased flawless nose riding, clean lines, and undeniable composure throughout the finals day.
  • Brotherly Battle: The event also featured an all-Filipino semifinal in the men’s LQS, which saw brothers Rogelio Jr. and June Esquivel (PHL) face off, with Rogelio Jr. dominating the heat.
  • Emerging Talent: Young Samar native Edgar “Taybo” Calvo Jr. (PHL) charged through the early rounds to reach the semifinals, marking him as a future star in Philippine longboarding.
