Get ready for a thrilling week of surfing as the SumatranSurfariis Hamamatsu Open makes its highly anticipated debut at Nakatajima Beach from May 21st to 25th, 2025. This inaugural event in Hamamatsu will feature both a World Surf League (WSL) Qualifying Series (QS) 2000 competition and a Longboard Qualifying Series (LQS) 1000 event, promising to showcase top shortboard and longboard talent from across the Asia region and beyond.
Nakatajima Beach in Hamamatsu will be the epicenter of surfing excitement as athletes compete for valuable points and prize money. The QS 2000 event holds significant importance for Japanese shortboarders, providing one of the few opportunities on home soil to earn crucial points towards qualifying for the Challenger Series and ultimately the elite Championship Tour (CT).
Adding to the stakes, the SumatranSurfariis Hamamatsu Open LQS 1000 stands out as one of only a handful of Longboard Qualifying Series events in the entire Asia region this year. This makes it a pivotal competition for longboarders aiming to climb the regional rankings and gain international recognition.
The current Longboard Qualifying Series Asia Region leaderboard highlights the strength of Japanese women’s longboarding, with Hiroka Yoshikawa currently holding the top spot, followed closely by Natsumi Taoka in second and Kaede Inoue in third. On the men’s side, the Philippines dominate the top three, with Rogelio Jr Esquievel leading the charge, followed by Perry Ventura in second and Jomarie Ebueza in third.
Meanwhile, the shortboard Qualifying Series Asia Region is also heating up. While Indonesia’s Bronson Meydi currently sits at number one, Japan boasts two surfers in the top three: Keijiro Nishi in second and Riaru Ito in third. The top three women in the QS Asia Region are all talented Japanese surfers: Nanaho Tsuzuki in the top spot, Anon Matsuoka in second, and Mirai Ikeda in third. The SumatranSurfariis Hamamatsu Open QS 2000 will be a crucial event for these athletes as they battle for valuable points in front of a home crowd.
Spectators can look forward to witnessing dynamic shortboard maneuvers and the graceful flow of longboarding as the world-class field takes on the waves of Nakatajima Beach. The event promises an exciting atmosphere for surf enthusiasts and the local community alike.
