Surfing’s elite from across Asia and Oceania are converging on Siargao, Philippines, for the 28th annual Siargao International Surfing Cup, now a prestigious WSL Qualifying Series (QS) 5000 event. This marks the highest level of professional surfing competition ever held in the Philippines.
The QS 5000 status attracts top names like Olympians Shino Matsuda (JPN), Reo Inaba (JPN), Billy Stairmand (NZL), and Amuro Tsuzuki (JPN) – the Tokyo 2020 bronze medalist. Young guns like WSL World Junior Champions Jarvis Earle (AUS) and Sierra Kerr (AUS) will also be vying for glory. Adding a family twist, Sierra’s father, former Championship Tour surfer Josh Kerr (AUS), joins the competition.
Following a strong Challenger Series season, top seeds Dakoda Walters (AUS), Sara Wakita (JPN), Paige Hareb (NZL), and Kian Martin (SWE) aim to solidify their positions for next year. They’ll face fierce challenges from defending champions Anon Matsuoka (JPN) and John Mark Tokong (PHL). Tokong leads a strong Filipino contingent, boasting a remarkable record of four wins from five finals in seven starts.
With promising weather, competition could kick off as early as tomorrow. “We’re thrilled about the potential for a day-one start,” says WSL APAC Tour Manager Ty Sorati. “Cloud 9 is a surfer favorite, offering perfect waves for incredible tube rides. We thank our Philippine partners for making this historic QS 5000 upgrade possible. It’s shaping up to be an epic week!”
The 2024 Siargao International Surfing Cup QS 5000 runs from October 26 to November 4, 2024, at Cloud 9, Philippines. Catch the action live or learn more at WorldSurfLeague.com or the free WSL App.
